Used items:  This is a vintage item and should be used as such.  I did brew water in the pot and it heated up pretty quick and got pretty hot.  Now, is it the heat that you require for the perfect cup of coffee?  I'm not sure.  I do not that the red light does nothing, but I also did not leave it on for a long time.  The water did smell from not being used for a LONG time.  This may be par for the course with old coffee pots.
