Helicopter crew chiefs are crew members who maintain and oversee operations aboard helicopters.
Crew Chief Patch - Flight Jacket Patch Door Gunner:
The Door Gunner position originated in Vietnam - Was originally the task of the Crew Chief and he was later joined by a second gunner (for the other side of the aircraft). As the war progressed the position of Door Gunner was usually filled by a non-aviation trained operative. The role of the Door Gunner was the maintenance and supply of arms on board helicopter and shooting at things.
A helicopter crew chief helps the pilot with in-flight instruction and safety measures, alerts the pilot to any obstacles not visible from the pilot's point of view and shoots at thing.
