Operation Arc Light was the Code Name for the Bombing Raids of the High Altitude B-52 Bombing raids against North Vietnamese Forces and commenced in June 1965.
The bombs, dropped from 30,000 could not be seen or heard until they exploded on the ground.
Initially the Arc Light Raids operated out of Guam covering the 2,000 mile distance to Vietnam to drop their loads before returning.
The Arc Light operations moved to Tapao Royal Thai Air Force base by July of 1967.
At the siege of Khe Sanh, with US Marines, Special Forces and elements of the 101st Airborne under attack from a superior VC force the B-52 campaign continued with bombs been dropped within 900 metres of the allied forces inside the base.
The bombing of the B-52 in Operation Arc Light were amongst the most feared of all allied weaponary attacks and proved successful at Khe Sanh and later, in 1972 at Pleiku.
