US Special Forces Group, Detachment B-53 was assigned one of the most prestigious of assignments of the 'Special Missions Advisory Group'.
Officially, they were assigned the training of the South Vietnamese Tiger Force Rangers at the base established at Long Thanh in 1961.
B-53 was active from 1964 through 1971. B-53 had a complement of 130 - 140 men at any one time. All assigned members were US Special Forces (no members of other Allied Military were ever assigned to B-53).
Detachment B-53 was a
HIGHLY CLASSIFIED
unit and all activities during their service in Vietnam were classified
TOP SECRET
. They reported directly, and only to MACV command. Formed in 1964 it took on the responsibilities that the CIA had previously performed in relation to Sabotage, Psychologicial and Special Operations. Apart from these roles little is known about the role of Detachment B-53.
Their patch was never worn on the outside of uniforms and was only ever worn as a beret insert or inside clothing.
