Description
Very Rare BadgeNghia-Lo, prior to 1962 this was an autonomous region known as the 'Thai-Meo Autonomous Region'.
A little know part of history, the region is situated in the Northwest of Vietnam.
The Thai-Meo Autonomous Region is bordered by China to the north, to the west and south by Laos , to the southeast by the Muong Hoa Binh region, to the east by the Phan Xi Pang mountain range separating ethnic groups concentrated in the Red River basin.
In 1890 , Auguste Pavie , then the French representative at Luang Prabang, proposed to the government of the country to recognize Deo Van Tri , a White Thai leader who was the Thai lord of Sip Song Chau Tai -

After the Japanese fascists surrendered to the Viet Minh, this area was controlled by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam .
During the period when the French colonists returned to invade Vietnam, there was a dispute between the Viet Minh and the French forces. By 1954, with the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu and their withdrawal from Vietnam, this area continued to be managed by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
On October 27, 1962 , the National Assembly passed a resolution to change the name of Thai Meo Autonomous Region to the Northwest Autonomous Region and to establish three provinces in the area:
Lai Chau, Son La and Nghia Lo provinces.
The autonomous region then had an area of 67,300 km², with a population of 438,000 people, mostly Thai and Meo Hill Tribe People
This rare piece was issued in 1972 to celebrate 10 Years of the Integration of the Thai Autonomous Region into the Republic of Vietnam.
